Mental health issues are increasing day by day around the globe. Mental illness is spreading like wildfires that highlight the magnitude of the hidden crisis in the world. Everybody wants to live with sound health, both mentally and physically. Mental health is an essential element to a healthy life.

WHO estimates that globally 1 out of every 4 people will be impacted by mental illness at some point in their lives.  350 million people worldwide suffered from depression.

 In 2024, The National Institute of Health reports that 57.8 million adults live with some form of mental illness. Mental Health Statistic 2024 presents almost 800 million people suffer from mental health disorders worldwide.

In fact, the prevalence of any mental illness was higher among women 27.2 percent than men18.1percent in 2021. 1 in 5 adults in the USA lives with a mental health condition.

Considered a curse or social stigma?

Over the past few decades, people have come a long way in how they think and view about mental illness. Time has been changed; many mentally ill people are becoming moiré open to talk about mental illness. But still a curse or stigma surrounding mental health. Society still has stereotyped views and opinions about mental illness. Some people believe people with mental illness are cursed by their past life. In fact, it is stigmatized due to abnormal behaviors from the mentally ill people; they are higher risk of being attacked or harming themselves and hurting others too. Mentally disturbed people are taken as Scary, comical and incompetent.

According to the American Psychological Association stigma happens when people are negatively viewed for having specific characteristic- whether that’s mental, physical, or otherwise.

“Mental health stigma” or “mental illness stigma” refers to the stigma attached to mental health conditions and the discrimination that can happen to people who are living with them.

Why is mental health stigmatized?

Mental illness is viewed as superstitious or supernatural causes, curses of deity, witchcraft and results of past life. Stigma prevalence a lack of proper understanding of mental illness. Mainly ignorance and misinformation are playing vital role to stigmatized mental illness in the society. The members of mentally disturb family is also ready to hide the real mental health problems and so does the sick person. The fear of isolation plays the role for hiding the truth.

How we can change the stigma from the forehead of a mental patient?

Here are 8 ways we can change mental health a stigma:

1.       Go to doctors, mental health counselors:  You may be reluctant to share your mental illness with others but do not forget to share with medical personnel for timely treatment. Good treatment provides you relief and relax mind.

2.       Boost your mental strength: Weakening your mind is weakening your mental health. Collect energy and fight against mental illness and prove it is not a taboo.

3.       Share your feelings: You should not isolate from others. Sometimes your family, friends and colleagues may have lack of understanding. So, make them aware about mental health. Share your feelings and motivate them to motivate you.

4.       Do not hide: If you hide your pain, you cannot gain right treatment. You must open yourself. Ask them for help and proper treatment. You can share your problems with your family members and friends.

5.       Write something: You know your problem very well. Others are also wandering by taking same problems. Try to express your experience in the form of writing.

6.       Stop Negativity: Do not identify that you are insane or lunatic. You are just mentally disturbed. Fight against stigma. It is a common problem in the human body and soul which can be easily cured.

7.       Make group: You can make own group. You can share your condition with them. You may not feel isolated. You can slowly treated by yourself.

8.       Maintain social relationship: You have to use proper and systematic language. You must prevent to overcome mental illness in your daily activities. Be good, do good.
